Medaka Strain – Panda Medaka
The Panda Medaka (Japanese name: パンダメダカ) is a genetically unique strain named for its signature dark eyes and contrasting pale body, evoking the look of a panda. This appearance is caused by a mutation in the mpv17 gene, which affects the development of iridophores—specialized pigment cells responsible for reflective shine in the eyes and body.
As a result, the eyes lack iridophores, appearing strikingly black, and parts of the body such as the belly may also lack reflectivity. This gives Panda Medaka a distinctive charm that stands out from other varieties. The strain is popular for both genetic studies and ornamental collections.
